Our Trainers

Mr. Roland Treitler (Lead Trainer)

Mr. Treitler started his career in the financial market. After trading derivatives for 13 years he switched to the environmental sector, in which he has been working since 2002. His unique and interdisciplinary experience – technical high school, political science at university, financial market and environmental sector – helps in managing environmental and development projects for the German Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), which he joined in 2011. He has been working on Transboundary Water Management and the National Water Master Plan in Afghanistan, on Ecosystem-based Adaptation in the flood and drought management and environmental economics in Thailand and conducted internal and external trainings for economics on environment and climate finances.  Lately, he supported the elaboration of GCF proposals of international organizations and GIZ.

Dr. Abdul Salam

Dr. Abdul Salam is an Associate Professor in the Department of Energy Environment and Climate Change, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). He has more than 20 years of international experience in research, consultancy and capacity building in the areas of bioenergy (biomass, biofuel, biogas), waste to energy, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and climate change mitigation. He has published four books and more than 60 internationally refereed journal articles and conference papers and a number of development and industry reports. He also has three years of working experience as the General Manager and Chief Design Engineer of an energy service company and carried out a number of consultancy and feasibility studies. He has implemented several research, development and industrial projects as well as programs funded by international organizations such as Asian Development Bank (ADB), Energy and Environment Partnership (EEP) for Mekong, Global Network on Energy for Sustainable Development (GNESD), Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and many private companies. 

Prof. Mukand S. Babel

 

Mukand S. Babel is a Professor in Water Engineering and Management Department at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand. Prof. Babel’s professional experience in teaching, research and consultancy spans about 30 years in Asia. He has over 220 publications in international refereed journals, book chapters and conference proceedings. He has also carried out more than 60 capacity building, research, and sponsored projects in collaboration with international agencies/organizations such as ADB, APN, Danida, FAO, IGES, UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO, UNU, World Bank, and various universities and institutions in Japan, South Korea, Europe and USA. One of Babel’s fields of expertise is ‘Integrated Water Resources Management’, the foundation for integrated watershed management, which is the theme of one of the project ideas that will covered in the workshop.

Dr. Nophea Sasaki

Dr. Sasaki is an Associate Professor in the Natural Resources Management Field of Study at AIT. He is a recognized forest carbon management scientist and REDD+ expert who has extensive experience in tropical forest management, logging, and forest carbon monitoring and modeling. He was a global expert panel on REDD+, forest management, and biodiversity conservation of the IUFRO, REDD+ advisor to Japan’s FFPRI REDD+ center. He has assisted private companies and international organizations in low-carbon project identification and development involving assessment and development baseline scenarios and local business opportunities. He has organized many training courses on REDD+ and identification of drivers of deforestation and forest degradation.  

Dr. Peeyush Soni

An Agricultural Engineer by profession, Dr. Peeyush Soni is Associate Professor of Agricultural Systems & Engineering at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok (Thailand). With over 12 years of work experience spanning across academics, research and consultancy, Dr. Soni has worked in diverse domains such as sustainable agricultural production; energy input-output analysis of agricultural systems; techno-economic & environment performance of agricultural systems; design & testing of farm machinery for sustainable mechanization of smallholders; field scouting & precision farming using low-altitude remote sensing.

He has published 60 peer reviewed journal papers, 6 Book chapters with reputed publisher, and several technical reports for international agencies such as UN-FAO, ESCAP-CSAM, ESCAP-APCTT.

Dr. Peter King

Dr Peter King has worked in the field of environment and development since 1971. Dr. King’s areas of expertise include environmental science, climate change, project management and financing, integrated economic and environmental planning, integrated water resources management, environmental assessment, regional development, environmental planning, land use planning, watershed management, urban and rural development, coastal resources management, strategic planning, environmental policy, land degradation and desertification, and institutional analysis.

Dr King has been an environmental consultant and advisor to the leading development organizations of the world such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). He has authored a multitude of policy papers on environment and sustainability.
